The Switch’s cartridges are small, flash-based technology that isn’t too far off from what the DS and 3DS used to play games. If you have a Switch, or if you know someone with one, you’ll know that it represents a return to cartridges for Nintendo home consoles for the first time since the demise of the N64 following the GameCube launch in 2001. The Gameboy Advance could play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games, the Nintendo DS could play Gameboy Advance games, and the 3DS could and can still play DS games using the same slot. After all, Nintendo has a long history of backward compatibility between consoles.
One of the most popular requests from fans is the ability for the Switch to work with Wii games. People just can’t stop asking to see games come to the system. Due to the portability and the fun in playing games on the Switch, no other console quite has the same level of requests as Nintendo’s latest. In particular, owners of the Switch have taken to hoping that games of all shapes and sizes get ported to the Switch, so much so that just asking for games to come to Switch has become a meme. Just because the library is excellent as it stands, of course, doesn’t mean a demand for a wider selection of games to play doesn’t exist. Fueled by a great library of exclusive titles, including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons-not to mention a ton of third-party and indie games-the Switch continues to sell out years after its initial launch. While the Wii U certainly stoked doubt as to whether Nintendo would survive into the future, it’s clear that the Nintendo Switch is a major success by any definition.
